Kelong Dinner

Kelong - a Malay word to describe a form of offshore platform built predominantly with wood and can be found in waters off Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia while only a handful remains around Singapore due to rapid urbanization. Kelongs are built by fishermen primarily for fishing purposes, although larger structures can also function as dwellings for them and their families. They are built without the need for nails, using rattan to bind tree trunks and wooden planks together. Over the weekend a group of us went on an seafood "makan" excursion on a Kelong somewhere near the southern coast of Pulau Ubin island. Its about 15 minutes by boat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal.

Boys were a little worried at first but as usual they warmed up quickly.
15 mins later.. we were approaching our "makan" place.
The boys loved the place the minute they step out from the boat. They were so comfortable running around, looking at fishes, exploring the Kelong and playing with the man made swing. We were more worried for them and kept shouting "be careful" especially when we are actually floating in the middle of the sea.
Here comes the food! YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pictures paint a thousand words so.. without further ....
It was close to sunset by the time we complete our dinner.
Overall, we had a great time! Lots of laughter, gossiping, watching the kids play and fight and most importantly we had a yummy feast.
What better way to end our trip..:) A visit to the toilet before departing....:P

One of the Top 10 chicken rice in Malaysia!

If you're bringing your kids to Taiping Zoo, do stop by to try this chicken rice! With the help of our little friend Madam GPS, we found Kedai Kopi Kok Beng. It's voted one of the Top 10 chicken rice in Malaysia.

Do come early as the queue can get pretty long!

We ordered a plate of poached chicken, roasted chicken and char siew.

Verdict: I Like the poached chicken more than the roasted. It's not silky smooth like the ones you get back in Ipoh but it is firm and tender. The Char Siew undoubtedly was very yummy. Look at the picture and I shan't say anything more.

Oh... i have to mention bout the chilli sauce!! You can taste it's homemade from fresh chillies, ginger, garlic and limau kasturi!

For Taiping standard, I think it's a little over priced. A plate of chicken rice is priced at RM3 and combination of meats would be RM5.

Location: Kedai Kopi Kok Beng
38, Jalan Kota
34000 Taiping

Opens daily from 11am to 3pm except Monday (Tutup)
